PC owners and computer users, in general, deal with a wide variety of technical issues with their gadget from time to time. One of these issues is in cases when computers freeze. This is a common occurrence that ticks off a lot of users and leaves them often wondering why it happens. In this article is a list with a brief discussion of the general reasons why computers freeze.

Erratic Device Drivers
Device drivers play a crucial role in the computer system as they ensure effective communication between the software and the attached devices. Manufacturing companies create specific drivers for their hardware products which must then be integrated into the computer’s OS. However, some drivers tend to have a few glitches. Oftentimes, it is those out of date versions that may cause computers to freeze due to unfixed bugs.
Faulty Hardware Components
It is a sad truth that some manufacturers, regardless of the size of the company, do not live up to its promise of high quality products and service. There are technological products released in the market that haven’t undergone proper examination and quality control measures for various reasons. One may be because the manufacturer is imposing unfair cost-cutting measures by creating substandard products. Another could be a glitch during the actual manufacturing of the hardware when incompetent developers commit mistakes in putting together system pieces.
These explain how some hardware comes out flawed and/or non-durable. Common examples are slow cooling fans, loose heat sinks and faulty internal wiring. Once a malfunctioning device is installed in the computer, the unit tends to freeze. Although most problematic hardware aren’t severe enough to cause the PC to shut down, they may still prove to be a regular nuisance.
Aluminum Electro Static Discharge and Migration
Computers that frequently freeze can also trace the root of the problem right at its very core. The system circuits get exhausted over time and may take a ‘break’ on its own. Moreover, they also age and permanently fail upon reaching its expiry date. So how does this occur?
A single computer unit is integrated with a lot of modern chips which are made up of tens of thousands of transistors. Such transistors can be found as an imprint on the surface of a very small silicon chip and communicate with each other through thinner wires that are made of aluminum or copper material. These wires are very susceptible to cracks when too exposed to heat such as when the computer is turned on and off. When the wires begin to break off, it affects the overall functioning of the computer.
A particular characteristic of a failing modern system circuits is aluminum migration. A perfectly functioning silicon chip is composed of aluminum wires that are arranged in tight parallel columns. However, they tend to overlap each other once exposed to too much thermal and electrical pressure, resulting to a circuit breakdown.
Some chip developers have already provided solutions to aluminum migration and created computer elements that can withstand time and stress. Still, there are other inevitable means by which a chip turns out faulty, like ineffective circuit designs, substandard components, undue thermal exposure, etc.
All these are the primary reasons why computers freeze. To eliminate such problem, one must take note of these and do the necessary repairs or changes.
